I didn’t know this was going to turn into a thread about community activism but since you’re a hippie you can probably associate with movements that begin with a large community of disenfranchised people.
We talk about this symbolic gesture as though it was in the immediate future which I don’t expect. And I don’t know what kinds of common events might transpire to bring it about other than the on-going efforts to get Afrezza owned by people who have as much incentive as Sanofi to kill it, or to damage the management or hamper their abilities to continue to market Afrezza and remain a going pipeline development concern. The multi-pronged attack hasn’t been sufficient yet, but it doesn’t seem to be letting up either.
In any case I’ll suppose that it will take another couple of years or so before this event would take place and in that time that the sales growth and addition of Afrezza users would continue pretty much as it is now roughly doubling each year and that the very large pool of increasingly angry diabetics submitting to the avarice of Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, and Sanofi will become increasingly aware of Afrezza as a tool available in the toolbox and not be particularly suprised that there are a group of enthusiastic adherents to an inhalable human insulin for mealtime use. I assume mothers of young T1s would be an especially sympathetic group although as you’ll no doubt mention, also a small community.
But let’s return to the premise posited by akemp3000 that the outcry from Afrezza users would be effective in keeping it alive as it were in the marketplace. I’ve said many times that one of the key barriers to Afrezza and Mannkind’s success has been awareness. I won’t repeat the many valid and bitter remarks about how disastrous was the Sanofi worldwide marketing agreement, but I will emphasize that full-on marketing by a company with the time and resources would (and will) make Afrezza a success if for no other reason than simply because of what Afrezza is. Afrezza is the fastest acting mealtime insulin on the market which is important because it puts near-real-time control of blood glucose in the hands of diabetics and with an increased margin of error with respect to hypoglycemia. This is huge.
So, fast forward a couple of years and the dark forces have been successful in removing Dr. Castagna as CEO and replacing him with an Oliver Brandicoot who announces Afrezza is not commercially viable and will end production and marketing within 6 months. At this point two years down the road there are now 4,000 Facebook friends and an even larger community of Afrezza users active on YouTube and other social networks.
Could the community spontaneously organize an awareness campaign that included a visit to the capital including a picture on the capitol steps? Surely. This isn’t far fetched at all. The question you ask is would it make a difference and could it be sustained? I don’t know. There are already a couple of celebrities with diabetes who use Afrezza. It is reasonable to suppose there could be a couple more by then. How would they feel? What would their ability be to bring attention to the matter? Unknown. Speculating too much about this whether you think it’s possible or unlikely either way is probably not a fruitful investment of time.
