OK, it's not really an art, it's more like a technical issue. When you quote some other member's post and then you want to comment on it, please make sure the text you're adding is going in below the quote box. If you put your text in the quote box, it looks like it's part of the other members' post, and that there's no reply.
Over the course of years as a PB admin, I've acquired a habit of just fixing posts with the reply text incorrectly placed into the quote box...it's not a big deal when I do it once every day or two. Today I fixed at least 3 such posts, though, so I'd really like to encourage members to:
a) Be careful when quoting and replying, to make sure to put your reply below the quote box;
b) check the way your post looks after you've posted it, to make sure the reply is in the right place;
c) if it isn't, immediately edit your post and fix it. Fixing it means just cutting-and-pasting your reply to move it from inside the quote box to after the quote box.
Thanks!!!

If you have the person's boxed quote above and you start typing but back space too many times, the cursor will end up above in the box quote but won't let you move back down unless you ctrl z. Just make sure you click below the shaded quote box line and don't backspace too many times if you decide to erase the first few letters or words you write.

One other thing - when there is a large quote, sometimes the program will not let you get in after the quote box. In this case - switch from "Preview" mode to "BBCode" (little blue tabs at the lower left of your reply). You can then put your reply after the final code.

See edits I made to the quotes above... I started typing here, outside the boxes, first. Then I edited the quotes, deleting the bulk of the posters' message and keeping only that part I am addressing in my quote.
It takes a few seconds, but saves readers a LOT of time scrolling through lengthy posts.

Great point (and one I've made in the past) about "editing down" the contents of the quote box, mn.
My other personal policy is not to quote anything at all if the comment I'm replying to is at the bottom of the last post in the thread, because, when reading sequentially, the context will be obvious. For example, in mnkdmillionaire's first post above, there really wasn't a need to quote my post.
Even when a comment is a post or two back, it's not difficult to word a reply in a way that clearly references the previous comment and avoids the need to use quoting.
Quoting is a useful feature, but can be overused. Think of the old adage, "To a child with a hammer, everything looks like a nail..."

Also, sometimes the quotes being quoted from the smart folks who contribute are very well worth reading twice. You know who you are (at least 20+ people ...all longs btw + Divinci if he's out of the stock...I admit i like his perspective).

I prefer to use the "New" button (even though it's difficult to click it in exactly the right spot every time!), so I'm seeing the posts in context and my style of not quoting the last post comes naturally. You might consider using "Recent threads" instead of just "Recent posts"; the process will take a few more clicks, but you'll be seeing new posts in context.

liane, are you and I that difficult to tell apart? Why do people seem to keep thinking I'm you? I mean, all we have in common are red stars and animated cats, after all...

BD, even though our dear friend baba quoted you, I have no doubt his intentional reply placement inside the box was aimed at me.

I simply thought when Liane used the term "BBCode" that baba mistakenly thought she was talking about him.
