The clinics are owned by a third party, most likely a company already in the business of operating clinics for some other medical purpose. They are not clinics that will solely promote Afrezza as they must also offer patients other therapies. But, they WILL offer Afrezza as a choice and the employees there will be schooled in the pros and cons of Afrezza and know for which patients Afrezza might best serve. That's why I called them Afrezza clinics but the name now chosen is much better.
This is a thousand percent better than what most endocrinology offices are currently doing for the patients that already want Afrezza and for patients who might want it if they only knew it existed. And, if we are going to be eventually proven right on the idea that the diabetes community does want Afrezza then this is an excellent way to find out if we are correct.
MannKind has no expenses here because MannKind do not own the clinics. But, since MannKind will be making a profit from the prescriptions written in these clinics, this can be a win/win/win/ scenario for MannKind, the clinics, and the diabetes community.
I wonder if Matt Bedell's dad would have an interest in opening a clinic in Australia. Matt's dad is a doctor and Matt is a T1 and Australia's #1 advocate for Afrezza.
If anyone reading this knows of anyone who is also an Afrezza advocate and is willing to invest, open, or operate a clinic, perhaps they should get in touch with Matt Pfeffer who could get them in touch with the folks who are opening these first clinics in New Jersey. If we all pull together on this idea, perhaps we can see two or three dozen clinics open this year, if not more...

I wonder if urgent care is used by patients when they have hypoglycemic events or if that is considered something that requires ER attention.
I would think targeting patients who have required medical treatment for hypoglycemia would be a good strategy.
I hope they track retention rates for Afrezza users within the context of these clinics and highlight that in some of their investor presentations or other CCs.

I have now been authorized to divulge a little something about these clinics. Many of you remember a very fine poster who was quite active here for quite a long time (like the rest of us, he wasn't much for stock prognostication ), but he's long on intelligence, creativity (these two characteristics are most unusual in UCLA guys) and work ethic; he's also a persistent guy (yes, the gutty little Bruin in him). And as a stubborn individual, he is intent on not allowing MannKind to sink slowly and quietly under the waves (think "Titanic"), but to fight this out and prevail. He and his business partner (another sharp guy who I also have met on a few occasions), are the brain trust behind these "clinics." They've been working (hard) on this concept for over a year, and approached Matt and MannKind about it a few months ago when they had it sufficiently polished. Matt was excited about the idea and so they have been running hard with it with MNKD's knowledge and blessing. They are pretty far down the line on this idea, it's not something that got thought up a couple of months (or days) ago (like Matt's presentation today), so it has some thought and substance behind it. In fact, I got a kick out of the Rob S. post about clinics a while back, and immediately contacted my friend about it, telling him how was it that I was bound to silence (some crap about attorney-client privilege - he actually hired me for a dollar so he could let me in on what he was up to!), but that Rob Sacher knew about the idea and was posting about it! My understanding is that Rob's mention was a total coincidence - great minds! I'm speaking, of course, of our old buddy, MannMade, who has made himself scarce around these parts for quite a while, first, because he's been very busy with this venture, and second, to avoid any appearance of impropriety (he also had to pick up a late shift at McDonald's when the stock tanked down to $1.50 (anyone remember those lofty, heady days, way back in November or December?). To the extent that MannMade would like to share any further details, I will leave that up to him. But he's part of the turnaround effort, and he's probably gotten more doctors interested (some very interested, actually) in Afrezza than Sanofi! Until those clinics start to click for him, I will continue to get together with him often, always with the same greeting, "that's two Big Mac Meals and supersize them, please." Godspeed and best of luck to MannMade and his partner (his partner is not a poster, but is as good a stock prognosticator as the rest of us!). Just in case anyone missed this:-)

The big question is how they overcome the problem of getting reimbursed by insurers for the operating costs of the clinics and how to get Afrezza covered for the patients. Someone posted an in depth article about how previous attempts at running diabetes clinics have often ended in failure because they couldn't get enough reimbursement.

Just in case anyone missed this:-) How will they target and attract potential customers? And who are they targeting? Diabetics w/o primary care or maybe without endos? And how to overcome the insurance hurdle still there? Seems like a very big idea that will take time (a couple years) to generate sales. I'm worried about the next 3 months

The company is currently establishing diabetes centers for patients, powered by Afrezza Diabetes Management. This is going to be a one-window operation, providing the drug, spirometry testing, on-site prescription writing, and healthcare insurance filers. It is possible to add these diabetes clinics to existing clients or combine additional ailments with diabetes to offset fixed costs not covered by reimbursements.
Price reduction of Afrezza is a matter of time. A few clinics may be sufficient to increase and maintain patients to break even. Hopefully, Matt will elaborate on this.

They could do it as a pop up tent at large faires and events - the type that sell funnel cones and slushies to the Amercian masses. Interesting to do it at a BP industry event to show how easy it is. Nothing like a demo. Gotta be a reasonable number of diabetic attendees considering the population statistics.
