Vernalis is a public UK company. They certainly have mid- and late-stage products that fit the areas of interest we know the RLS-MNKD collaboration is addressing. So do many other companies, however.
The connection you didn't have time to elaborate on was probably Vernalis' pain candidate, which "is currently in development as a potential treatment for a range of pain disorders. The FAAH enzyme metabolises the endocannabinoids (ECs) which are neurotransmitters acting on a range of different receptors. Inhibit FAAH, and elevated EC levels appear in the nervous system. ECs have been shown to act upon receptors which modulate both pain and inflammation." (Vernalis NCE Pipeline)
I am not in a position to evaluate whether their products are plant extracts.

The FAAH enzyme metabolises the endocannabinoids (ECs) which are neurotransmitters acting on a range of different receptors. Inhibit FAAH, and elevated EC levels appear in the nervous system. Amongst the receptors which the ECs act upon are the CB1, CB2 and TRPV1 receptors, stimulation of which has been shown to relieve pain. ECs also act on the PPARα receptor which is known to reduce inflammation.

FAAH inhibitors
May cause powerful analgesic response
Since endocannabinoids are only produced on demand, it may be that FAAH inhibitors, such as V158866, can selectively increase the local levels of neurotransmitter in tissues. This could deliver a powerful analgesic and anti-inflammatory response, without the side effects that more widespread cannabinoid receptor activation can generate.
Clinical Studies: Positive results were announced in September 2011 for V158866 in a Phase I SAD and MAD study. The double-blind, placebo controlled study investigating single and multiple ascending doses was conducted in healthy male volunteers. The objective of the study, to identify doses of V158866 that are both safe and well tolerated and to measure the compound's effect on FAAH activity and endocannabinoid levels, was achieved. The study has confirmed V158866 is a potent inhibitor of human FAAH and has identified once daily doses to be tested in future studies in pain or other indications.
Project Status: Pre-clinical studies completed, clinical studies were initiated in March 2011 and the positive results of the Phase I SAD and MAD study announced in September 2011. We initiated a Phase II proof-of-concept study in 2013 and anticipate data in 2014.

Why do you think Perle? They seem to only be working on applications related to diabetes. Everything we have been told about RLS has nothing to do with diabetes....

Their listed chairman is Craig E Allen and their listed director is Mitchell E Greenblatt www.sos.wa.gov/corps/search_detail.aspx?ubi=603583610I can't find any relation between Craig Allen and Paul Allen, which is what I am guessing you were implying. The shared last name does appear to be a coincidence... |

Looking through the Jagla trademarks, I found a few that seem interesting. She has previously registered trademarks for Upsher-Smith Laboratories, Merrimack Pharmaceuticals, Horizon Pharma, Incyte Pharaceuticals, Endocyte Inc, ... Tons of pharmaceutical work. These trademarks were not only for potential drug names, but websites and extended trademarks of the companies themselves. I found the work of Upshure-Smith to be most in line with what we know about RLS, with respect to treatment areas and the fact that they are a private company. I looked at their website and the first thing I saw was two recent collaborations for development of drug candidates for treating seizures and CNS disorders. Their website is down because their data bandwidth ran out with their host cos as soon as posted the link many investors had accessed the link and like every one knows there are more investors in mnkd than Afrezza users :-) Did you believe the website down cos you found out who RLS is ? The error message says bandwidth exceeded |
