just like the railroads that needed more land to expand the lengths their locomotives could reach.....MNKD is seeking more land in Danbury. Below is a post from cphammer on YMB who gave his permission to post over here with his following statement "Have at it Joey, maybe there are posters from the area of Danbury and provide some more background."
cphammer
We have been told that the plant is expandable
For as long as I can remember the Danbury plant is expandable and would take years to reach its capacity. So this is what's bothering this afternoon? Why would Mannkind be looking to take over vacant land to expand its facilities.
1. Partner believes increased capacity is needed in Danbury or perhaps Danbury will supply Europe as well.
2. Could MNKD be looking to develop a site for insulin production?
3. Mankind is looking to develop a new product or products and want this separate from the Afrezza facility.
The last makes the most sense to me at this point in time, its a big undertaking regardless and to put a plan like this in motion there must be confidence in some kind of Afrezza deal. Kind of like looking for a new house when you just got an offer on yours.
Not sure if there are any posters from Danbury here but I do remember a poster saying they saw the biggest crane they've ever seen in that town at the existing facility. This coincides with a recent article on how the unemployment rate was dropping with Danbury's booming pharmaceutical manufacturing growth. Numbers 1 & 3 are definitely exciting possibilities if nothing else who knows maybe the city will start implementing eminent domain (half joking) ;-)

Joey, The crane post was on the YMB (about 99% sure, as I responded to it). As someone in the construction business a crane would only be used for setting something on the roof, or if expansion has already started, which I doubt. Would be easy to find by checking building permits in Danbury. It wouldn't be used to place something INSIDE the plant. My 2nd point is 100,000 SF isn't huge for a Production facility, in general. I have done work on a distribution Center for a generic Pharma Co. in my home town. We recently did a 150,000 addition which takes this one center to over 1 million SF. I don't know what the new land is about, but it def. has to be positive. Any time you need more space, it means you are growing!

A pleasant memorial park for those betting against MNKD?
Good stuff, thanks for posting!

With regards to the crane,
My last job had an office with an attached factory, when they started expanding production they put in a enormous diesel generator to protect from power outages. I wasn't there when it was installed, but I bet it required a crane to get it in place.
Fyi When running a factory at minimal capacity power outages aren't that big a deal (they just need something to keep all that insulin cool) but a single outage for a factory running at full capacity would cost millions...
The generators for the size production we are talking about are expensive, I'd expect the 'big' one to be installed after approval.
With regards to increasing the facility size, until they buy the land I'm just considering this due diligence. But, won't be surprised if they do.
I'd expect an factory in Europe first...but the weight/price for shipping Afrezza relatively small.
I'm not sure about manufacturing and selling Afrezza in Europe vs, here and shipping it; with regards to taxes and the partnership. But, it could influence wether to expand here, etc.

And you could be spot on if installed on the roof. Any new interior equipment is not going through the roof was my point.
