BIOMEDICAL ADVANCED RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY (BARDA)

The Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, provides an integrated, systematic approach to the development and purchase of the necessary vaccines, drugs, therapies, and diagnostic tools for public health medical emergencies.

The mission of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) is to develop and procure medical countermeasures that address the public health and medical consequences of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) accidents, incidents and attacks, pandemic influenza, and emerging infectious diseases. Specifically, BARDA supports the advanced development and procurement of drugs, vaccines and other products that are considered priorities for national health security through its programmatic initiatives.

This was really, really cool of Martine Rothblatt to showcase MannKind's BluHale inhaler in this DARDA keynote presentation. Partnership might be the wrong word to describe these two, friendship sounds more accurate.

This is very cool.  It certainly wouldn’t hurt for MannKind to land a defense contract to develop military uses for the Technosphere platform.

pK is very important.

BARDA and CDC are under HHS.

My vote is their interest isn’t pK, but the longer shelf life without refrigeration.

This could be very useful in natural disaster response and some of the harsher environments our military operates...

I’ll get excited if they sponsor a formulation, until then the news is just “interesting”.

Anything that comes of this likely isn’t a profit maker, but we could use the boost in mind-share.

The MannKind... who?  Afrezza... what? Is beyond annoying at this point.

I agree that MannKind could serve an invaluable role in natural disaster responses, military operations, etc etc.

The PK is definitely of importance though. Systemic absorbtion of FDKP is not metabolized and is eliminated completely unchanged. FDKP has no biological activity, FDKP does not facilitate drug absorption, no evidence exists indicating that FDKP is cytotoxic, no evidence exists indicating FDKP has any effect on airway epithelial tight junction integrity, cell viability, or cell permeability—FDKP functions solely as the particle matrix. All that would be important.

To me it isn't even about profit making with this, it is supplying a product that can be self-administered across the age-groups that is safe, effective, reliable and easy-to-use, one day it could mean that we are using this versus some inferior injectable crap.
Tons of high profile DoD people were there, including the director of DARPA. This was really significant in term of exposure and validity. Rothblatt is highly respected among these people and well-known, hence was a keynote speaker. Not to mention that Al Mann had a rich history with the government, as well as Kent Kresa. I think showcasing MannKind in the presentation speaks volumes, and creates MannKind scientific chatter. IMO.
