Think this has been covered a couple of time here before. But it still puzzles me: the fundamentals have improved over the last year, yet the short interest has gone from 29MM to 49MM Sept'12 to Sept'13. The only plausible explanation I have is: some of the longs are locking in profits, and doing that via a corresponding short (allows them to book additional profit if there's a downside below their initially carry). Baffling otherwise. Any additional insights are welcome. The significant increase in the number of shares outstanding since Sept. 2012 (with more to come in Oct. ) could explain this. Fairly similar, percentage-wise.
