At 89 years old, it would be time for me to complete the endgame, for which I have dedicated 60+ years of my life.
I would restructure, splitting Mannkind Corporation into two companies. All assets related to Afrezza would stay with Mannkind Corporation, while all other assets, including Technosphere, pipeline and all remaining assets would go to my second company.
1. Mannkind Corporation would be sold to become a subsidiary of a giant pharmaceutical company. My new company would collect Afrezza royalties and Technosphere license fees for BP to manufacture Afrezza, using my FDA approved Technosphere delivery system;
2. I would call my new publicly-traded company Mannkind Technologies Corporation (herein called MannTech Corp);
3. All my remaining private companies would be consolidated into MannTech Corp and I would complete my legacy with the final push for the holy grail of diabetes treatment...
...the world's first true artificial pancreas / infusion pump.
4. MannTech Corp would immediately acquire Amphastar Pharmaceuticals in stock swap / cash from sale of Mannkind Corporation and become a subsidiary to MannTech Corp.
5. MannTech's new subsidiary Amphastar would continue to supply insulin for BP-owned Mannkind Corporation's manufacturing of Afrezza until BP gets another insulin FDA approved for use with Afrezza, after which MannTech would continue to collect Afrezza royalties and Technosphere license fees. Amphastar would also manufacture MannTech Corp pipeline drugs for FDA trials.
6. Application would be filed for FDA approval of implantable artificial pancreas, using a Technosphere-delivered insulin manufactured by Manntech Corp's Amphastar.
7. By the time FDA approves the world's first artificial pancreas, I would be in my mid-90's.
8. I would retire, and Mannkind Technologies would be handed over to my shareholders for continued development of Technosphere-delivered drug applications. They would decide whether or not to sell.
...and my legacy would come to an end. Health permitting, I would spend the rest of my days lecturing on entrepreneurship and navigating the perils one must overcome to delivering new technologies and drugs in an industry that discourages entrepreneurship.
That's what I would do, if I were a billionaire and just turned 89 years old. And tomorrow, August 11, 2014, would be the first day of my final push. Good fortune all.
