Can someone explain this to me? How does it work? When will SNY and MNKD know if it's going to be covered? Would it be something that was announced or not? Would it have to wait for launch ?
Just think this is something that feels like it should be upcoming but I'm not sure how it all works
Any insight? Thanks !

Sanofi is probably in discussions with insurance companies already. They present Their case about Afrezza to the ins co. The plan is to get it on the ins co's formulary. In some cases it might need prior authorization which makes the docs writing for Afrezza to go thru some hoops to get it approved.

Is approval a shoe in / formality or something to be concerned about?

When considering any new pharmaceutical drug, there is never just a 'formality' involved because anything can happen. But, Afrezza will more than likely be priced correctly and the inhaled insulin certainly will have more than enough people who will be using it for insurers to find a spot for it.
I recommend that you read articles written by someone who calls herself, Psycho Analyst, who writes for the website called Seeking Alpha. She also replies to many interesting comments with a lot of information. She seems to know the insurance issues very well.

Great find KC. Two other drugs on the list with Afrezza, Kerydin and Jublia I already write RX's for in my office. Only a matter of a very short time before docs are writing for Afrezza.

Playing devils advocate how come those other two have been accepted and we still haven't heard anything regarding afrezza approval?

It may take a few years, but once the insurance companies start to see the data being accumulated by SNY and MNKD from Afrezza users, Afrezza will become their drug of preference for most of their diabetics and even pre-diabetics. Doctors will soon become the best spokesmen out there for Afrezza. The benefits from early intervention that Afrezza provides, makes it virtual no-brainer for insurance companies to cover Afrezza. We don't read much about the serious and very costly long term complications that Diabetics could eventually have to deal with. We spend endless days talking about a1c level, dosing, etc, but seldom if ever discuss the end game that non compliant diabetics will face one day. Just to name a few, wound care, amputations, blindness, neuropathy and kidney damage. With Afrezza, the doctor will finally be able to look at their patients square in the eye and tell them, I know you don't want to start injectable insulin, but here is your only choice, either start using Afrezza or find yourself another doctor. www.diabetes.org/living-with-diabetes/complications/

I was asked by a friend of mine who also has mnkd stock if this would be a "big event." See my response to him below...
It has been stated by Mannkind previously that Afrezza will be priced similarly to the insulin pens (which includes a slight premium in pricing) so has been expected to happen, but I do not think it had been priced into pps yet.
I believe it is one last binary event before launch and the hard sales data begin to be available. So yes I do think it will be a "big event" if/when announced pending actual pricing.
However, as with past positive binary events (ad com, fda approval, Sanofi Partnership) the Bears and Shorts (forces of BS) seem to find a way to profit and take the share price down. The only argument they will be able to make at this point is doctors won't prescribe and diabetics won't adopt or ask for Afrezza. Which with Sanofi's announced "controlled launch" of Afrezza will likely appear to be true at first thus giving support to their thesis and quite possibly keeping the pps in check for first 6 to 12 months post launch.
But yes... When announced it will be very good news as removes one more piece of uncertainty...

Which I interpret as those other two drugs are already in the market, since prescriptions are being written. Afrezza might have been approved for all we know, but not yet out there so no prescriptions written yet. It is a matter of time, I guess.

Exactly, when Sanofi is ready to market and sell Afrezza, which we have been told will be in first quarter, that's when docs will start writing for it. Currently I am at the stage where the rep for Kerydin is in my office every week and Jublia is advertising on TV and sponsoring dinner lectures.

Let's hope that when/if they make an afrezza commercial it's a little better than the jublia commercial, if that's the one with the big toe in boxing gear.
Omg that's so bad.

I am reposting this link from YMB. Posted originally by Lakers_W. KC posted a similar list from Express Scripts. Thank you to both.

The above list states limited distribution for the year 2014. Wonder this means Afrezza is already a part of CVS/Caremark formulary. Once ESRX is on board, then that should cover the largests of all prescription service, what does everyone think? I wonder if Novolog will again be a part of ESRX formulary in 2015... My only worry was that if some of the most popular rapid pens will not be covered, then will they cover Afrezza...
