Institutional interest rising would seem to be more important than short interest rising at least for long-term investors and positional traders whereas it might be the other way around for day traders...IMHO

Just had all of my loaned shares returned by Schwab. First time that's happened to me. Anyone else? Thanks for reporting, I still have mine at Schwab and I'm surprised they returned them because the interest rate is 10% . If you call them and see if you can lend them again please let us know what they say. I would be interested thanks

Now if a lot of people start getting their shares back and not re-borrowed, that would be a different story.

Though, for what it is worth, I've noticed from posts here that it seems Schwab tends to not be as quick to return shares. I've had shares on loan since not too long after FDA approval and only once did I get shares back. I think it is simply a different way of administering their program vs Fidelity. They pay less, but they don't immediately return shares even if they are sitting on some not loaned out. At least that is my guess.

Update: Schwab rep yesterday explained to me there was slightly less demand for shares and my lot was randomly selected for return. However, they were loaned out again this morning.

Unfortunately I wasn't wise enough to trade my MNKD shares as you did. Held shares from pre FDA, bought more at extremely high price, averaged down at very high price and now... shorts to the left of me, dreamers to the right, here I am, stuck below a dollar.

The opportunities have been there, I have averaged down to .77 since the day Sanofi announced they were finished. It feels good to know I'll be making money @ .78 if we ever get there.

Just for kicks, I'm predicting a significant increase in Short Interest to be announced in several minutes. Up maybe a few million?
