Making a smaller cheaper CGM will help us, but the partnership is years away from creating a new device (speculation). Afrezza will sink or swim before then...
Google has the cloud analytics, hosting, etc. and Dexcom has the market leading CGM. Google has been working on a non needle (like) glucose monitor (see contact lense sensor) an I bet it needs the inteligence built into Dexcoms CGM to move the project forward. I'm sure Dexcom has been working on 'predictive' glucose monitoring, which is very complicated, but the next big thing. And, Google needs that too.
Google obviously has experience in making things small. If the collaboration results in a sensor the size of a penny (contact lense size) it would be a godsend for diabetics and everyone would have one. The initial monitoring would be displayed/calculated from a Google powered cell phone but the number crunching capabilities of "the cloud" would make it truly powerfully. Think dietary plan created to stabilize glucose levels, and optimized for individual patients.
It's a good collaboration...
I also think Dexcoms work with Apple hasn't worked out as expected. Apple HealthKit hasn't been a success...and Dexcom needs to get their patients data in the cloud and accessible to Doctors to maintain their competitive advantage.
A cheap CGM that's wildly adopted would absolutely help Afrezzas adoption but it doesn't exist. CGM's are (currently) great but expensive.

Is there anything they don't plan to dominate? I keep remembering the Back to the Future movie where Marty goes into the future and Taco Bell dominates dining options. What will Google be like in 20 years?

Google will turn out to be Skynet and not Taco Bell in Back to the Future.

Yeah but then Bill turned the reins over to Steve Balmer who predicted the iPhone would be a flop. So much for being a visionary...
