Once again, this could have to do with Mr. Mann's comments on sharing processes with Sanofi. I can imagine they would want to patent every little thing if they were doing that.

The cost of patenting is cheap initially considering the amount of optionality it provides.
It's only after prosecutions starts and ROW fees are kicking in that serious decisions need to be made.

Two of the inventors named on this patent are scientists at ATCC in Manassas, VA - a very interesting research organization.
