I don't know how many retail longs hold. But, as an example, there are some that have alluded to owning over half a million shares in their postings. Regardless, you can only control your shares...not those of others. So viewed from that perspective, it is irrelevant what others are doing.

Schwab "only" pays 40%, but my small buy that settled yesterday was immediately snapped up to be loaned out. Besides the income these rates may give some indications about price movements. With 20/20 hindsight I can see short squeezes where when rates came down or shares were returned the squeeze was over and the price plunged. The MannKind saga has convinced me that being an altruistic buy and hold investor is a tough road. Short squeezes may be nice, but if the price spikes and you don't sell you're just standing around with your hands in your pockets.

Update: The upwards trend in borrow rate is broken. We enjoyed a nearly constant increase since december, but things changes recently: What are your thoughts? www.screencast.com/t/vZyhGzzM07n

Hmm. Rate to borrow depends on available shares to borrow and demand to borrow. assumption: demand to borrow is constant. Therefore there are more shares available to borrow. If retailers sold significant amounts of shares to someone else this should not increase the available amount for borrowing. Or: what sort of shares were not available for shorting but have become available? Funds, US and Non-US can also lend out, right? I assume most retailers do (knowing or not ). So who is left?

Borrow rate at IB has gone up to whoopy 168%, this is the highest value in the last 2 years! It was at 25% in Jan 16. Last big pike was around Nov 14th at about 150%, which I assume was due to TASE. Forgive my ignorance. What is IB?

There are 1.5M shares available for shorting according to IB. Borrow rate is down to 90%. Wasn't Matt saying that the shares went to selected investors who take care that they are not shorted?
