Medicaid covers a lot of people who are not "older." It covers millions of poor people of all ages. Doubtful these were the folks getting prescribed/fighting for the drug. Or had even heard of it as of yet. Whether they've fighting for it or have even heard of it, presumably at least some of their doctors have heard of it and are prescribing it for low-income diabetics. And contrary to what some may think, many low-income people read, write, and go online to learn about their diseases. I have low-income friends who do online research at their local libraries.

Ok, it's time for Spiro to share his story. On Aug 12, 2016 Spiro's insurance company said in a letter, " We have reviewed your request to obtain Afrezza under your medicare prescription drug plan. This request has been approved until 12/31.16. After that date my doctor will have to resubmit a letter of medical neccesity as she did for the first prescription. The next day, Spiro goes to the pharmacy to pick up his Afrezza and was told that his insurance company would not cover Afrezza. The pharmacist calls the insurance hot line and was told that they could not cover Afrezza because there was no such drug, even though the pharmacist had 2 boxes in his hand. The pharmacist was told, that the NDC number was only for non medicare patients. Spiro being out of Afrezza dug very deep into his cheap Greek wallet and forked over $315. Good health is more important than money. Upon arriving home, the empty wallet Spiro called Roberta at MNKD, who then contacted a guy named Quintero. Spiro was called back within minutes by Quintero, who got Spiro connected to Mankind Cares. Several hours later Spiro was contacted by Mannkind Cares. Spiro was immediately e-mailed a patient authorization form, which he filled out and faxed back to MNKD Cares. During the next 3 days, Spiro spoke to at least 4 different people at Mannkind cares. Apparently Mankind Cares really does care. They contacted Spiro's doctor several times, requested and received the necessary documentation. They contacted Spiro's insurance company and pharmacist several times. Spiro was called numerous times by Mankind cares to keep him informed. Tuesday, Spiro was called and informed by Mannkind Cares that his prescription was ready to pick up at his pharmacy and that his co-pay would be $70 for his 2 boxes of 4 unit cartridges. He was was also told that the pharmacist would replenish his depleted wallet with a $315 refund. Spiro has been rather shocked by the incredible aggressiveness and efficiency of Mankind Cares. Spiro does not know what Mankind Cares did to convince his insurance company to cover Afrezza, but they damn sure got the job done.
Spiro here, It sure seems that MNKD is getting it's act together

And contrary to what some elitists may think, many low-income people read, write, and go online to learn about their diseases. I have low-income friends who do online research at their local libraries. Presumably not. Also probably not. And its also doubtful lower income folks are getting quality healthcare. You may have seen several dozen documentaries and news stories on this? Perhaps some point in the future when many more doctors get on board it may trickle down the healthcare system. Certainly hoping for that scenario

I was under the impression that no Medicare Part D plans have been covering Afrezza for the past 8 months.. We checked all part D plans the first of this year, and Afrezza had been taken off of their formularies.. So is there another Medicare program that covers prescription drugs?? I'm a bit confused about this. I also remember Mike saying that Medicare part D plans would not be covering Afrezza til 2017.

If it went smoothly (not possible), you should email Matt and let him know about your experience. By any chance did the MannKind Care personnel have Indian accents?

OK Baba, I want to know how you expect a Greek to differentiate between an Indian and Pakistani accent (or for that matter, Algonquin, Iroquois, Cherokee, Apache...) they are all Greek to me!

Baba, believe it or not, Mankind Cares actually does care. My pharmacist actually asked me, who the heck are these Mankind Cares guys? It remains to be seen, if Endo's will be smart enough to utilize the services of Mankind Cares to help not only themselves, but also their patients in the pre- authorization process with the insurance companies. Hopefully in several month's NRx numbers could start to see the impact of this help.
Spiro here, 2 boxes in the fridge and 2 more coming next month.
