The question is will the VA use Afrezza as the best meal time insulin or will it be just another option in the tool box. If they use it as the standard of care to treat Veterans with Diabetes this is huge if not then this news is the same as making it available to the rest of the population.

Crazy sad number. Like the homelessness, suicides, and VA problems arent enough to make you want to scream and puke in the way the U.S. has come to handle the serious issues of those we ask to fight and risk everything. Hoping the drs and nurses at the VA get trained on titration etc and this helps many vets

Simply making Afrezza "available" is not what's big about this VA news, any more than it is for "the rest of the population". The real issue here, IMO, is unrestricted coverage/reimbursement for Afrezza (insulin human) Inhalation Powder for thousands of vets being treated for diabetes.

Available is different than being prescribed. Again it will take time for it to work through the system. It will not be an overnight situation as we have seen the commercial market it is a slow slow uptake.
It also seems that this was part of a normal bid process for the VA to accept drugs. Notice there were 999 offers in full and open competition.
Pricing Type Fixed Price with Economic Price Adjustment Single or Multiple Award Multiple Award Extent Competed Full and Open Competition, 999 offer(s)

"Delegated authority by the General Services Administration, the VA Federal Supply Schedule (FSS) program supports the healthcare acquisition needs of the VA and other government agencies. Our program manages 9 multiple award Schedule programs for medical equipment, supply, pharmaceutical, and service contracts (FSC 65, 66, and 621). With nearly 1,900 contracts and nearly $11 billion in annual sales, the VA FSS Service provides Federal customers with access to over 1 million state-of-the-art commercial products and services.
Like GSA Schedule contracts External link to a government website, the VA Schedules are indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity type contracts awarded to pre-approved vendors using full and open competition. Additionally, the FSS program negotiates firm-fixed pricing based on a commercial “most favored customer” pricing concept, including an option for economic price adjustments. All products and services are state-of-the-art and provide national/worldwide coverage"
Interesting.
Why are we so sure this is for Afrezza?

That's a pretty high number. The MNKD wheels keep grinding forward. Slowly but surely.

If you go to the OP link to the Department of Veteran Affairs? It clearly states a contract #V797D6075E stating that the Awarded Vendor is MannKind Corporation, stating that the contract is an, "INTERIM AGREEMENT UNDER FSS SCHEDULE 65 I B DRUGS, PHARMACEUTICALS,& HEMATOLOGY RELATED PRODUCTS" with a POP of 12/16/16 - 6/14/17 (5 months).
So this is an interim agreement that began last week (Dec 16) and runs until mid-June 2017.
