I viewed today's OneDrop announcement as interesting at face value but the obvious question is, is there more?
Anyone who has been following the direction of medical care is seeing more use of integrated technology and teledoc services. Specific to diabetes we are seeing a rush to provide real-time monitoring via the cloud, teledoc services and direct product fulfillment. We have all the big tech names looking at healthcare as the next big technology frontier with diabetes being the first big mountain to conquer- Google/Verily, IBM, Microsoft, Qualcomm, and Apple to name a few.
A few years back there were a few stories about Apple and them wanting to turn the apple watch into a CGM. These stories were then followed by some follow-ups saying the efforts had failed and the apple watch as a direct CGM was not going to work. Then things went silent, nothing until about 6 months ago when stories started about the super secret project Apple was doing to create a new CGM which would be linked to the watch.
I then come across some CNBC report and then saw something similar in Apple Magazine

It basically says Apple is developing a CGM which will talk to the watch but will be done in such a way so the watch does not require FDA approval. At the bottom of the article I see One Drop mentioned which I find interesting as its CEO has been showing up everywhere Mike C. is even on his twitter profile. Then a little more digging to see the relationship between this guy and Tim Cook.
Where Apple is going is pretty clear and they have $250B in cash to do it. The questions are how fast are they going to get there and what will be their path. One Drop is interesting because they have a pretty good monitoring platform and they already have a product to consumer delivery model in place. It would seem a prime target for an Apple acquisition.
Now anyone who knows anything about diabetes knows the future direction in treatment is "time in range" which means addressing meal time spikes in real time and getting the PWD back to baseline ASAP. The interesting thing is there are only two things which can do this; a healthy pancreas; and afrezza. I think the One Drop guy and Tim Cook have figured this out. They tell me Tim Cook is a pretty smart guy.
On the other hand we have Google/Verily/Onduo or whatever you want to call it messing around with Sanofi. Teamed with them you have Kevin Sayer and Dexcom. What happens to Dexcom if Apple comes out with an integrated CGM and has a monitoring and delivery model in place which includes exclusive afrezza distribution rights?
Two things we learned from the Sanofi launch of afrezza is Stephen Schwarz knew a different approach than selling door to door was needed for the T2 market and afrezza exceeded everyone's including Stephen's expectations with afrezza users calling it life changing. At this time what Mr. Schwarz and Kevin Sayer are doing is not clear. But I bet neither is sleeping well tonight as no other current or known work-in-progress diabetes product can do what afrezza can do.
If Apple snatches One Drop and afrezza and comes out with an integrated Iwatch/Iphone/CGM, its game over for Dexcom and Sanofi's T2 efforts. For Onduo they will not be able to compete. We are now in the big leagues. The question is who blinks first? IBM, Google or someone else?
What did MNKD close at today $72.02, just saying? Afrezza really is that great and technology is going to save it. With CGMs there is no more hiding the numbers.
