The “best” effort that can be made is to reduce global warming.
With regards to fire retardant: The material is called Foscheck. It is primarily made up of 85% water, 10%fertilizer (ammonia phosphate and sulfate ions), and 5% minor ingredients(iron oxide for color, clay or bentonite). It works by coating the ground, buildings and plants with a moisture (like water, but has a 'stickyness' to it) usually dropped by aircraft and reducing the flammability. It is non-toxic to humans if it gets on your skin but can be harmful to animals if swallowed. It is red because once dropped it is easily visible from the air and on the ground.
Can you make a better fire retardant? Sure. But, it’s also likely to be more harmful to the environment than Foscheck. Don’t forget eventually everything ends up in the sea...
There are many many areas of the world terrified by global warming... there are islands “sinking” and lands that will become less hospitable. Even putting maximum effort into the problem will still result in more frequent natural disasters.
California is one of those areas (coastal) that are going to be facing increased difficulty. They’re going to have to spend enormously in forest management. It will help but what do you do about increased dryness and high winds? It’s not like you can remove all the vegetation...
If you’re concerned about droughts/fires etc. I’d be monitoring the snowfall in the Colorado mountains. The water runoff is being diverted everywhere including CA. If Colorado strings together several years with low snow, so many places will be @#$’d.

Divert govt space exploration spending for a moment and concentrate efforts for problems here on Earth would be a great first step. Oh could I get on my soapbox over that statement. I have been a fan of space exploration since I was a youngster. I remember hurrying home from school to watch Neil Armstrong land and then he and Buzz walk on the moon. On my black and white TV nonetheless. I felt so bad for Mike Collins having to mind the orbiter while Neil and Buzz made history. I knew in my own mind that he played a very important role however. What a time of discovery! I'll tell you what, how about we order just one less F35 fighter jet at a cost of ~$120M each? How about we stop trying to be the world's policeman and get out of Afghanistan after 17 years of maiming U.S. soldiers (who now can't even get their Veteran's benefits) Maybe then we could fight a fire here at home. The comments the dullard in chief made about California, like so many of his comments are once again stupid and reprehensible. This is getting too political for this board but I'm simply commenting on a statement already made. As stated previously, my heart is with those who lost family, homes and businesses in California.

Wonder if it would help if the city routinely sprayed some sort of fire retardant everywhere, like make it apart of the local community upkeep, like with paving roads and filling potholes or repairing stop-lights. Spray the fire retardant on lawns and city park grass and mulch, in trees, in ditches, etc. Something human and animal friendly and really small like an invisible mist, nano size. Does something like that exist? anderson already mentioned it. It's called FireIce. The company was beat down just like MannKind. Just another one of my "great" investments... The only place that needs to be sprayed by fire retardants everywhere ... is Hell. And if you do total spraying on Earth, then you will be in Hell with all the cancer that people will develop.

The situation in California is very sad. Lots of dry tinder sitting in the forests only made worse and worse by the hot dry air. I know in my township I can no longer burn because I may effect the air quality and stuff is just piling up. When you have acres of woods there are lots and lots of fallen trees and branches waiting for a good match. It seems federal and state mangers face the same issue as me. www.npr.org/2018/11/12/666951838/megafires-more-frequent-because-of-climate-change-and-forest-managementThe good news is the sun may help us out and cool things off. The sun spot activity has been way down this year and the thermosphere is cooling

it shouldn’t be burned anyway it should be mulched and something done with it, even if that’s just tilling it into the soil

Wow, peppy's report said that the ice caps will be totally gone in a couple of years. Now we have the lack of sunspots to bring record cold and more ice caps. Amazing what can happen in a couple of days !!!
I think Mother Nature takes care of herself. If we abuse the privileges of being here, then we will be gone. Take care of everything ... then we will be allowed to stay.

Nature will cleanse the planet and it won't be pretty. I suggest we try to live in harmony with nature.

I once spoke with an old forester from out West who said that our zero-tolerance of wild fires for the past century is a big part of the problem. In nature, fires burn up the brush and keep the understory more or less clear. Unless they were already highly stressed, the larger trees tended to survive. When we stopped allowing these brush fires, the brush grew, and subsequent fires quickly spread into the upper canopy. These fires are very difficult to contain. This^^^ And today, controlled burns are never as efficient in maintaining fire protection as are nature's wildfires. (I'm not minimizing the effect on the drought and high winds.)

Does FireIce dilute or wash away with rain? Seems that if it is sprayed, then it must have a huge water content and will wash away in any rain storm. Interesting product.
