MannKind Announces Direct Purchase Insulin Program Providing AfrezzaÂź for as low as $4 a Day More than 65,000 patients currently pay cash for their daily insulin each month January 16, 2019 16:30 ET | Source: MannKind WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., Jan. 16, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- MannKind Corporation (Nasdaq:MNKD), a company focused on the development and commercialization of inhaled therapeutic products for patients with diseases such as diabetes and pulmonary arterial hypertension, today announced a direct purchase program to help those with diabetes obtain the companyâs inhaled insulin, Afrezza, for as little as $4 a day. Afrezza (insulin human) Inhalation Powder is a rapid-acting inhaled insulin indicated to improve glycemic control in adult patients with diabetes mellitus. âIt is important for MannKind to help those whose lives depend on insulin, and, unfortunately, over 65,000 uninsured or under-insured patients today must pay cash for their insulin each month, typically at the pharmacy counter at prices that reflect the costs of the pharmaceutical distribution chain,â said Michael Castagna, Chief Executive Officer of MannKind. âOur new Afrezza Patient Direct Program enables us to streamline the numerous costs and inefficiencies that exist in todayâs healthcare system, so we can pass along the savings directly for these patients. We want to be part of the solution for the future of healthcare and healthy living.â Participation in this innovative cash program, which is available to all eligible patients with a valid prescription, is simple. The first 1,000 people to register at www.insulinsavings.com will gain access to introductory pricing for the Afrezza Patient Direct Program, giving them the opportunity to purchase Afrezza for as little as $4 a day for the first twelve months. All participants who sign up for the program will gain access to attractive cash pricing for Afrezza. Additional program information is available online at www.insulinsavings.com. Patients who would like to enroll should click the âRegister Nowâ button and follow the instructions. MannKind has partnered with Eagle Pharmacy to process patientsâ prescriptions and to ship Afrezza directly to their home. Payment is made using any major credit card. MannKind has also launched an enhanced copay and savings card program that will enable patients with commercial insurance to fill their prescription at their local pharmacy for as low as $15. The card, along with complete program details, can be downloaded at www.afrezzasavingscard.com. âOur founder Al Mann had a vision of making Afrezza available to all people living with diabetes, and itâs concerning that rising costs may cause some with diabetes to go without insulin,â Castagna said. âWe hope that our new programs will have an impact and help many in need.â

I was thinking OneDrop since they already have a direct to consumer model that cuts out the middle man, but Vdex would be an interesting partner too.
Mannkind can use both. OneDrop for the direct sale infrastructure and Vdex for consumers to get a prescription. So if a consumer wants to get Afrezza through the direct sales program, he/she can get a prescription from Vdex and then get the prescription fulfilled through OneDrop. OneDrop is a medical device while Afrezza is a drug which means that while a pharmacy can sell OneDrop, OneDrop cannot fill prescriptions without the necessary pharmacy license in each state. That is why the company has partnered with Eagle Pharmacy to handle the drug sales. While the FDA approves drugs and devices for sale, state pharmacy boards still make the rules as to who can fill a prescription and keeping all fifty of them happy is no easy task.

Is the idea to get patients hooked on afrezza the first year so that they continue on afrezza when they pay more in subsequent years? It seems to be a good business model for drug dealers.

Doubt it. Limited to first 1,000 who sign up and no real revenue generated from this program. More of a sampling program fit for blind promotion and marketing with some good press if they can manage.

Will they dedicate commercials to this ? Or, will 1K PWD that have been put off by cost, insurance obstacles, etc., now say, "Hey, I can afford to try this for a year even if it is out of my pocket" and it is now a matter of getting their doctor to write prescription? A good intro to Afrezza for both the PWD and their doctor perhaps.

Because the introductory price program is good only through the end of this month, it might drive weekly scripts up significantly over the next two weeks if there is good participation and little cannibalization of existing users. And it will be interesting to see Mannkind's followup if the program is well received.

If marketing was on top of this, the press release would already be listed on the Mannkind website under news and events on the home page. It takes no time to post these things, and it would demonstrate a cohesive organization working together to promote their company and products. Should have been updated 10 minutes after the press release. To be fair, the news feed in the link News and Events is updated automatically, but the homepage looks like it requires a manual update. The homepage is far more effective to promote this information.

Will they dedicate commercials to this ? I doubt it. They have to build awareness of it though. They could recut the footage of the current commercial and fit in a tag for the program in markets where the program is legal but I suspect they'll use other means like targeting doctors who currently prescribe. Will be interesting to see what they do.

The first 1000 get the super low price but everyone who signs up gets "attractive" pricing.
