My husband's first 90 day Afrezza blood test is in. Unlike many of our conscientious "testers", he is not so vigilant about ever testing his blood sugar.
Here are the facts.
Type 2 diabetic for 7 years Previously "maintained" at 7.9 and climbing, despite excellent diet, skinny, mega dose of Metformin and onglyza Begged Dr for Afrezza from Feb to July Went for pulmonary tests Other clearances Kaiser doesn't cover this, so we have to pay more than $400 monthly (after coupon) Started Afrezza three months ago
He had some trouble adjusting in the beginning and used the "Coach" program After about a week, he started inhaling 10-15 minutes after starting meal (or snack) About a week after that, he stopped checking his bg starting it had regularly been under 150 with no hypos
No bg tests between then and now. (I know, not the best role model) A1C results from Thursday's blood test showed 6.1
I'd like it under 6, but right now, I'm ecstatic!

Wonderful... undoubtedly will be even lower next time.
Afrezza is a success... no question about that. Now we just need MNKD to be successful. But great to hear another Afrezza success story in the meantime. Health matters more than money.
Love the new profile pic, he/she is adorable.

Wonderful. We cannot wait to hear how his 'reluctant' M.D. responded to the 90 day results.

7.9 to 6.1 is amazing. I was reading the charts that predicted what the drops are supposed to be and this is more than amazing. I'll be lucky to make it to 6.7 according to the chart. Maybe I should cut down on the BG testing. It may not help my A1C but would give my fingers a break. Keep up the great work.

That is great and can't wait to hear what his doctor will say. Very happy for you both.

Impressive beyond words. And with no nagging! ...or ineffective nagging (which sue?) All my nagging was PRIOR to Afrezza. I had done the research on the technology and wanted a change in his protocol. It just wasn't working any more. Besides, he had very nasty gastro issues associated with metformin. He takes care of himself, so it's not like he says things that are bad for him (besides pretzels occasionally). I wasn't too worried about hypoglycemia because of the experiences of others. Since he had only used oral drugs prior, he says nothing has changed. However, my father had diabetes and it consumed his life. I'm actually happy this controls his blood sugar without thinking much about being diabetic. Perhaps he will never need to find out how life consuming the management of diabetes with injectable insulin is. So, why would I nag?

Love the new profile pic, he/she is adorable. Thanks. He is one of my three deaf Dalmatians. I figured it was time to change back from conspiracy to puppies and rainbows.

Not the 'taking' This story is the holy grail ive been waiting for...Type 2, dosing routine established, well controlled, amazing numbers...WITHOUT even bothering to test. I think this last point is very freeing and exciting

"No bg tests between then and now." Thinking about it, seems like savings from not having to buy test strips should help with the overall costs of treatment.
Hopefully Afrezza will get better placement on Kaiser's formulary soon, as you have achieved a lot with its help (7.9 down to 6.1 A1c is great !).

Al had mentioned this during one of his lengthy interviews as an observation/prediction of patient costs iirc

suebeeee1,
I imagine that you and your husband are probably already familiar with Kaiser's procedures for requesting coverage of medications, but it occurs to me that people on this and other discussion boards, who are insured by Kaiser, can also submit the form requesting Kaiser to add Afrezza to their formulary at a Tier 2 placement.
Request to add or delete medications
Our Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee will consider requests from Kaiser Permanente members, physicians, or pharmacists to add or delete medications on our formulary. You can download a form to submit this request .(PDF)
